Rio Rancho Man Sentenced for Unlawful Gun Possession

Cory G. Bates, a 29-year-old Rio Rancho resident, was sentenced to 84 months in prison for violating federal firearms laws by unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition in New Mexico.

According to court records, Bates was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition due to his status as a convicted felon, having prior convictions for aggravated burglary with a deadly weapon, armed robbery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and cocaine trafficking.

The case against Bates was prosecuted as part of a federal anti-violence initiative aimed at targeting violent, repeat offenders for federal prosecution. This initiative involves the U.S. Attorney’s Office and federal law enforcement agencies working with New Mexico’s District Attorneys and state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies to make communities in New Mexico safer places for people to live and work.

Bates was initially arrested in June 2016, on an indictment charging him with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition on January 9, 2016, in Bernalillo County, New Mexico. He subsequently pled guilty to the indictment on February 5, 2018.

The investigation into Bates’ case was conducted by the Albuquerque office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Albuquerque Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney George C. Kraehe prosecuted the case.

Bates’ prison sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release. His lengthy prior criminal history and the severity of the offense led to the significant prison sentence handed down by the court.
