Toledo Pastor Found Guilty of Sex Trafficking Minor
A Toledo pastor has been found guilty of sex trafficking a minor and other crimes, in a case that highlights the darkest side of faith-based exploitation.
Anthony Haynes, 40, a former pastor at Greater Life Christian Center in Toledo, was convicted of conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of a minor, sex trafficking, child exploitation, and obstruction of a sex trafficking investigation.
The jury delivered its verdict after a trial that began on Monday, following an investigation by the FBI’s Northwest Ohio Violent Crimes Against Children Task Force.
Haynes was accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl, who was in his custody, from 2014 to 2017. He was also accused of filming the assaults and paying the victim ‘hush money’ to keep quiet.
Haynes allegedly facilitated the victim being exploited by other men, including Kenneth Butler and Cordell Jenkins, who have previously pleaded guilty to their roles in the sex trafficking conspiracy.
Butler and Jenkins were accused of causing other juvenile girls to engage in commercial sex acts, with Butler allegedly doing so from 2015 to 2017 and Jenkins in March 2017.
Haynes is scheduled to be sentenced on June 17. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael Freeman and Alissa Sterling.
U.S. Attorney Justin E. Herdman and FBI Special Agent in Charge Eric B. Smith praised the bravery of the victims and the dedication of law enforcement personnel in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
The case is a stark reminder that even those in positions of power and trust can perpetuate some of the darkest crimes.
