Tampa, FL – The grim reality of law enforcement’s relentless pursuit of justice was made evident today as Wayne Lamar Davis (55), a notorious St. Petersburg felon, was sentenced to 17 years and 6 months in federal prison for illegally possessing ammunition.
Davis’ crime spree reached a climax on March 8, 2024, when he committed a traffic infraction while transporting two young children to school. His defiance of authority escalated as he violently resisted arrest during the subsequent stop, stripping down to his underwear and leading police on a brief chase. Cornered, Davis was found in possession of a loaded firearm, recovered from his vehicle.
The judge’s decision hinged on Davis’ prior record, which includes convictions for robbery, aggravated assault, resisting an officer with violence, and conspiring to possess cocaine. This enhanced sentence was handed down under the Armed Career Criminal Act.
Investigation into this case was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the St. Petersburg Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney David P. Sullivan led the prosecution.
This conviction is another victory for Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a comprehensive initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. Launched in May 2021, PSN focuses on fostering community trust, supporting local organizations, strategic law enforcement priorities, and measuring results to ensure safer neighborhoods.
The sentence sent a clear message that the days of getting away with firearms as a felon are over, thanks to the unwavering efforts of law enforcement agencies and their commitment to public safety.
