Felons and Guns Bring Lengthy Sentences
A recent string of sentencings in Wyoming highlights the state’s ongoing struggle with felons possessing firearms and engaging in drug trafficking. Jason Brock Latoski, 36, of Cheyenne, was sentenced to 35 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm and unlawful user of a controlled substance. The case, investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, also included a $400.00 fine and a $100.00 special assessment.
Latoski’s sentence follows a similar case against Adarus William Greenway, 29, of Detroit, Michigan, who was sentenced to 147 months imprisonment for being a felon in possession of a firearm and using a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime. Greenway was also ordered to pay a $400.00 fine and a $100.00 special assessment. The investigation was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The harsh sentences come as no surprise in light of recent efforts to crack down on gun crimes in Wyoming. However, the state’s ongoing struggles with methamphetamine distribution also took center stage with the sentencing of Wesley John Niles, 44, of Orin Junction, Wyoming. Niles was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The case, which was the result of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) joint investigation, also included restitution in the amount of $200.00.
Niles was arrested in Douglas, Wyoming, and was part of a larger effort to dismantle drug trafficking organizations in the state. The OCDETF program, which is a joint effort between the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, aims to identify, disrupt, and dismantle the most serious drug trafficking organizations in the country.
Other notable sentencings in the state include Jamie Atilano-Araiza, 27, of Mexico, who was sentenced to six months imprisonment for illegal re-entry of a previously deported alien into the United States. Atilano-Araiza was arrested in Greybull, Wyoming, and was ordered to pay a $100.00 special assessment. He is subject to deportation upon release from custody.
Alfredo Romero-Garcia, aka Alfredo Romero, 50, of Mexico, was also sentenced in connection with the crime of illegal re-entry. Romero-Garcia, who was arrested in Jackson, Wyoming, received time served, plus ten days, and was ordered to pay a $100.00 special assessment. Like Atilano-Araiza, Romero-Garcia is subject to deportation upon release from custody.
