⏱ 2 min read

Tremayne Coombs, a 32-year-old repeat felon from the District of Columbia, was caught with a loaded Glock 23 .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol in a Nissan Sentra on Benning Road SE on August 4, 2023. The car, which was parked and unoccupied, also had two bags of marijuana weighing 32 ounces. Coombs’ DNA was found on the gun and its magazine, and due to his prior convictions, he was prohibited from possessing any firearm.

Coombs has a lengthy history of firearm and narcotics convictions, including a 2013 conviction for possession with intent to distribute cocaine and a 2016 conviction for unlawful possession of a firearm. His prior record made the latest offense even more egregious, as he was on supervised release for another offense when the loaded Glock was found.

On March 6, 2026, Coombs pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon. He was sentenced to 36 months in prison, with an additional three years of supervised release. Federal prosecutors had requested a 71-month prison term, but Judge Jia M. Cobb ultimately decided on the shorter sentence.

The case highlights the ongoing issue of repeat offenders and firearms possession in the District of Columbia. Coombs’ history of convictions and his latest offense demonstrate the need for strict enforcement of firearms laws and supervised release programs.
