A wave of violence in Texas has been met with a fierce response from the DOJ, with 17 defendants sentenced to over 261 years in federal prison for their roles in gun trafficking.
The crackdown, led by Eastern District of Texas U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs, targeted individuals who used firearms to commit crimes, including drug trafficking, robbery, and domestic violence.
The cases included Israel Sanchez Arciga, who was sentenced to 27 years in federal prison for trafficking methamphetamine, as well as possessing a firearm. Brandon Elliot Bennett was sentenced to 87 months for robbing a licensed firearms store in Plano of over 60 guns.
Other defendants, including Jaquallon Tyjuan Hargett and William Charles Fincher, were sentenced for using firearms in the commission of crimes. Charles Bernard Byrd, a Houston gang member, was convicted by a jury in Beaumont for his role in a violent crime spree.
The sentences are a result of a sustained effort by the DOJ to keep firearms out of the hands of violent offenders and make communities safer.
