Four fentanyl dealers have been slammed with lengthy prison sentences in the Eastern District of Texas as part of a crackdown on the deadly opioid.
Isela Mendez was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison for distributing tens of thousands of fentanyl-laced oxycodone pills from her home. Meanwhile, Victor Manuel Navarette Roman, an illegal alien, was sentenced to 18 years for importing fentanyl from Mexico and Jessie Zavaleta Peralta got over 19 years for distributing large amounts of methamphetamine and fentanyl.
Nathan Jesse Garcia received 20 years for his role in a fentanyl distribution conspiracy, while his co-defendant, Lino Hernandez, got 13 years. Two other defendants, Jaquavian Markeith Veasley and Corey Bouchea Grant, are awaiting sentencing after being convicted of providing and trafficking fentanyl.
The crackdown comes as part of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, with U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs saying that combating fentanyl is key to protecting victims and serving the community.
The cases highlight the devastating impact of fentanyl on Texas communities, with at least one death linked to the trafficking of fentanyl-laced heroin by Grant and Calvin Autae Thompson.
