Michael Wayne Finch, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, New York 2009

BUFFALO, N.Y. – A Sanborn man is behind bars after being sentenced for a felony gun charge, violating a prior conviction. Michael Wayne Finch, 61, was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

On November 19, 2009, Finch was stopped by New York State Police in Lewiston. During the subsequent execution of a search warrant, troopers recovered five firearms and multiple rounds of ammunition. Finch was prohibited from possessing any of the firearms because of a prior felony drug conviction in the State of South Carolina.

Finch was sentenced to time served of 42 months by Chief U.S. District Judge William M. Skretny. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas S. Duszkiewicz handled the case.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between the New York State Police, under the direction of Major Michael Cerretto, and Special Agents of the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, under the direction of Frank J. Christiano, Resident Agent in Charge.

The sentencing is a reminder that violating prior convictions can have serious consequences. Finch’s sentence serves as a warning to those who think they can skirt the law.

Finch’s case is a prime example of the importance of community policing and the work of law enforcement agencies in keeping our communities safe.
