Joshua Carney, a 32-year-old from Wheeling, West Virginia, was involved in a large-scale fentanyl trafficking operation that stretched from Cleveland, Ohio, to the Ohio Valley. The operation was discovered in January 2024 after reports of suspicious activity at Carney’s residence on Wetzel Street in Wheeling. An investigation by the Ohio Valley Drug Task Force led to the seizure of over $5,000 in cash, multiple cell phones, and significant amounts of fentanyl and cocaine base.
The operation was conducted near Ritchie Elementary School, with Carney selling more than 5 grams of methamphetamine in the area. This led to a search warrant being executed at his residence, where Carney and a co-defendant were found hiding in a utility closet.
Carney’s sentencing to 60 months in prison marks the final conviction in the case, with three other defendants already sentenced for their roles. Rahim Duncan, Terrell Sparks, and Tyshaun Johnson received sentences ranging from 41 to 115 months in federal prison.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at eliminating the threat of fentanyl and other deadly drugs. Fentanyl has been designated as a weapon of mass destruction due to its extreme lethality, posing a grave threat to public safety.
