CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – D’quon Morrow, 27, is trading the streets of Cedar Rapids for a federal prison cell after receiving a 135-month sentence for peddling deadly fentanyl. Morrow was sentenced today by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams, a penalty for his brazen distribution of the opioid, particularly near Madison Elementary School, putting children at risk.
The case, built on evidence from a plea agreement, reveals a consistent pattern of drug dealing between February and July 2024. Morrow conspired with others to push fentanyl and cocaine onto the streets of Cedar Rapids. The indictment details several transactions, including a March 2024 deal involving 6.50 grams of fentanyl and fluorofentanyl, and a May 2024 sale of 20.75 grams. But it was the June 2024 distribution of 48.60 grams of fentanyl *near* Madison Elementary School that likely sealed Morrow’s fate. Adding insult to injury, Morrow was also caught selling a firearm in April 2024 while already a convicted felon, having previously eluded law enforcement.
When authorities finally raided Morrow’s residence in July 2024, they didn’t just find drugs; they unearthed a small arsenal. Two firearms, ammunition, and a staggering cache of over 1,000 fentanyl pills were recovered, painting a clear picture of a man deeply entrenched in the illicit drug trade. This wasn’t a small-time operation; Morrow was a significant link in a dangerous chain.
Assistant United States Attorney Devra T. Hake successfully prosecuted the case, leveraging the combined resources of the Northern Iowa Heroin Initiative and the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF). The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and the Iowa Division of Intelligence and Fusion Center. It’s a multi-agency response to a growing fentanyl crisis that’s ripping apart communities nationwide.
This case also falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aiming to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering trust between law enforcement and communities. Furthermore, it’s part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative focused on dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations. The Department of Justice is throwing everything it has at these threats, and Morrow is just one casualty.
Morrow will serve an eight-year term of supervised release following his 135-month prison sentence. Unlike state systems, there is no parole in the federal system, meaning Morrow will serve the full duration of his sentence. He is currently in the custody of the United States Marshal’s Service awaiting transport to a designated federal facility.
