A 28-year-old Mercedes resident, Bryan Alexis Cedillo, has been indicted for his role in a fentanyl overdose death in McAllen, Texas. Cedillo allegedly sold narcotics to another individual, which resulted in their death. This incident occurred despite Cedillo being aware of the victim’s passing, as he continued to sell narcotics. The indictment was returned on July 21.
Cedillo made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Juan F. Alanis, who ordered him into custody pending further proceedings. The court heard that Cedillo possessed with intent to deliver fentanyl, which led to the death of the individual. If convicted, Cedillo faces a mandatory minimum of 20 years and up to life in federal prison, as well as a possible $1 million maximum fine.
The investigation was conducted by the Weslaco Police Department with the assistance of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarina S. DiPiazza is prosecuting the case. An indictment is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless convicted through due process of law.
Cedillo’s case highlights the dangers of fentanyl and the importance of holding those responsible for its distribution accountable. The Southern District of Texas continues to combat the opioid epidemic, and this indictment is a step towards addressing the issue.
