TAMPA, FL – Yaphet Martin, 38, of New Port Richey, Florida, is headed to federal prison for over twelve years after being sentenced for a July 2023 traffic stop that exposed a dangerous cocktail of drugs and an illegally possessed firearm. U.S. District Judge William F. Jung handed down the 12 year and 7 month sentence on Monday, following Martin’s guilty plea in August 2024.
The bust unfolded when Clearwater Police Department officers pulled Martin over. A strong odor of marijuana wafting from the vehicle provided the probable cause for a search, and the officers didn’t waste time. Hidden behind the center console, they discovered a green camouflage bag stuffed with 3 grams of fentanyl, 7.66 grams of MDMA, and 3.48 grams of cocaine. The bag also contained tools of the trade – a digital scale, a glass pipe – and a hefty $3,182 in cash. But the discovery didn’t stop there. Officers also recovered a loaded firearm, complete with four rounds of ammunition.
This wasn’t Martin’s first rodeo with the law, not by a long shot. Court records reveal a rap sheet brimming with prior felony convictions: forgery, first-degree robbery, delivering an imitation controlled substance, and – crucially – felonious possession of a firearm. These convictions already prohibited him from owning or possessing any firearms or ammunition under federal law, turning the gun found in his vehicle into a significant aggravating factor. His extensive criminal history triggered an enhanced penalty, adding years to his already substantial sentence.
Assistant United States Attorney Samantha Newman skillfully prosecuted the case, building a solid argument based on the evidence gathered by the Clearwater Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant United States Attorney Suzanne Nebesky is handling the forfeiture of assets seized during the investigation, ensuring any profits from Martin’s illegal activities are stripped away.
This case is a key component of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a multi-faceted program designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement at all levels and the communities they serve. Launched in 2021, the current iteration of PSN prioritizes building trust, supporting community-based violence prevention programs, and strategically focusing enforcement efforts.
The sentence delivered to Yaphet Martin sends a clear message: trafficking deadly drugs like fentanyl and illegally possessing firearms will not be tolerated. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing efforts to dismantle drug networks and keep dangerous criminals off the streets of Florida and beyond.
