Courtney McGee Cannon, a 43-year-old Topeka man, left a bag of fentanyl in a daycare center restroom on February 5, 2026, putting the lives of innocent children at risk. Cannon had walked into the restroom and dropped the baggie, which was later found by an employee who turned it over to security. Surveillance video identified Cannon as the culprit, and further investigation revealed he was involved in fentanyl trafficking.
On February 12, 2026, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant and found a distribution amount of fentanyl on Cannon’s person. He confessed to selling the deadly drug, and on March 4, 2026, a federal grand jury indicted him. When arrested two days later, Cannon was again found with distribution quantities of fentanyl.
Cannon pleaded guilty to three counts of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. U.S. Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser expressed shock at Cannon’s negligence, stating that the situation could have turned into a horrific tragedy if an adult had not found the baggie. Cannon is scheduled to be sentenced on December 16, 2026, and faces a sentence determined by a federal district court judge.
