A Los Angeles man, Alfonso Guerrero, 39, has been sentenced to life in federal prison for selling fentanyl that caused the death of a Vero Beach man, David Eller, in May 2023. Guerrero sold 0.1 gram of fentanyl to Eller in exchange for another controlled substance, and just two days later, he was caught with more fentanyl intended for distribution. The deadly transaction was captured on a doorbell camera, and investigators found drug paraphernalia near Eller’s body. Guerrero’s extensive criminal history, including gang membership and prior convictions, contributed to the life sentence.
According to court records, Guerrero’s fentanyl sale was not an isolated incident. He had a history of violence and crime, including attempted robbery with a firearm in California and aggravated assault in Georgia. The US Attorney’s office, along with the DEA and local law enforcement, worked together to hold Guerrero accountable for his deadly conduct.
The case highlights the dangers of fentanyl and the importance of holding dealers accountable for their role in the opioid epidemic. A small amount of fentanyl, equivalent to a pinch of salt, can be deadly, and Guerrero’s actions demonstrated a blatant disregard for human life.
The life sentence imposed on Guerrero serves as a warning to other dealers who would engage in similar conduct. The US Attorney’s office and law enforcement agencies will continue to work together to trace fatal doses back to the dealers who sold them and hold those dealers fully accountable.
