TACOMA – Dustin Carl Wurges, 37, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a massive fentanyl distribution scheme that could have claimed dozens of lives, announced U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman.
Wurges was arrested on November 8, 2021, after a high-speed chase in a Chevy Tahoe he was riding in with an estimated $287,000 in cash, three firearms, and three sets of body armor. The driver, Jonathan Mayhall, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on March 4, 2024. Judge Benjamin H. Settle warned Mayhall that the quantities of fentanyl found in the vehicle could have caused fatal overdoses.
According to court records, law enforcement became aware of Wurges and Mayhall’s involvement in the Aryan prison gang’s trafficking operations in the Puget Sound region. The duo set up a deal with contacts in southern California, initially agreeing to pay $50,000 for controlled substances. However, when the prices seemed too low, they increased the budget by an additional $200,000.
As Wurges and Mayhall returned from California, law enforcement monitored their progress, eventually arresting them at a rest area in Thurston County, Washington. The seizure of their vehicle yielded over 4 kilograms of fentanyl, nearly 2 kilograms of cocaine, more than 1 kilogram of heroin, 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine, two firearms, three ballistic vests, money counters, and over $87,000 in cash. A pistol was also seized from the purse of a female co-conspirator.
Wurges entered a guilty plea in October 2023, with both the prosecution and defense recommending a sentence of 10 years in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release. At the sentencing hearing, Judge Settle emphasized the severity of the crime, stating, “This is a very serious crime because of the wake of damage it leaves behind.”
The investigation was a collaborative effort, led by the FBI, with significant contributions from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Washington State Department of Corrections, and local law enforcement agencies, including the Tacoma Police Department, Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, and Thurston County Narcotics Task Force. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Zach Dillon and Max Shiner.
