Fentanyl Kingpin Sentenced to 70 Months
Luis Matias, a 29-year-old Buffalo man, has been sentenced to serve 70 months in prison for distributing butyryl fentanyl, a deadly synthetic opioid.
According to authorities, Matias was convicted of possessing with intent to distribute and distributing butyryl fentanyl in the Buffalo area. The investigation into Matias’ activities began in July 2017, when law enforcement officers received information that he was distributing large quantities of the highly addictive substance.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy C. Lynch stated that undercover officers and a confidential source were used to conduct controlled purchases from Matias, ultimately leading to his conviction.
The plea is the culmination of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Ray Donovan, New York Field Division; the New York State Police, under the direction of Major James Hall; and the Buffalo Police Department, under the direction of Commissioner Byron Lockwood.
U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Wolford handed down the 70-month sentence, bringing an end to the case. The sentence is a significant blow to the fentanyl trade in the Buffalo area, and a testament to the hard work of law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation.
Matias’ sentencing serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of fentanyl on communities across the country. The highly addictive substance has claimed countless lives, and its distribution continues to plague cities and towns nationwide.
