Defendant Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison for Cocaine Trafficking

A Monroe County man was sentenced to 60 months in prison for his role in a cocaine trafficking conspiracy, the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced.

Jhonathan Gutierrez-Esquea, 33, of Stroudsburg, Monroe County, admitted to participating in a drug-trafficking conspiracy that obtained cocaine in Texas and distributed the cocaine in the Monroe County and Northampton County areas in 2011.

According to United States Attorney Peter J. Smith, Gutierrez-Esquea’s involvement in the conspiracy led to his conviction on charges of conspiracy to distribute cocaine.

Gutierrez-Esquea was sentenced by Senior United States District Judge Edwin M. Kosik, who also ordered that the defendant be supervised by a probation officer for two years following his prison sentence if he is not deported.

The investigation into Gutierrez-Esquea’s activities was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Stroud Area Regional Police Department, and the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigations.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert J. O’Hara.

Gutierrez-Esquea also faces deportation proceedings, which will be handled separately from his prison sentence.
