Fernie Garcia Sentenced to 63 Months for Methamphetamine Distribution

Fernie Garcia, a 36-year-old resident of Nampa, Idaho, has been sentenced to 63 months in federal prison for distributing methamphetamine. The sentence was handed down yesterday in a U.S. District Court in Boise.

According to court records, in February 2023, Garcia sold a pound of methamphetamine to another person on two separate occasions. He was stopped by the Nampa Police Department on February 22, 2023, and a drug canine alerted on the vehicle. Two pounds of methamphetamine were found, and Garcia was arrested on the scene. He admitted that the drugs in the vehicle belonged to him.

Garcia was on parole for a felony sex offense at the time of his arrest. He claimed to have dropped out of a gang during his previous prison sentence. U.S. District Judge Amanda K. Brailsford also ordered Garcia to serve five years of supervised release following his prison sentence. Garcia pleaded guilty to the charge in November 2023.

Nampa Police Chief Joe Huff praised the efforts of his department’s Special Investigations Unit and the K-9 team that helped in the case. ‘We’ll continue to work hard to keep our streets safe,’ Huff said. ‘Our police officers and their K-9 partners work diligently every shift to help us get drugs out of our community.’

Garcia’s sentence is a significant blow to the methamphetamine trade in Nampa, a city that has been affected by the devastating effects of the drug. U.S. Attorney Josh Hurwit commended the Nampa Police Department for their work in the case.

Thompson Case: In a separate case, William James Thompson, III, a 47-year-old resident of Nampa, was sentenced to 63 months in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The case involved a foot pursuit in Caldwell, where Thompson discarded a bag containing 79 grams of methamphetamine.

Thompson claimed to have intended to distribute the methamphetamine, and at the time of the offense, he was on supervised release for a 2019 federal conviction for unlawful possession of a firearm. Chief U.S. District Judge David C. Nye also ordered Thompson to serve three years of supervised release following his prison sentence. Thompson pleaded guilty to possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine in December 2023.

The sentences in both cases demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies in Idaho to combat methamphetamine trafficking and keep the state’s communities safe.
