Firearms Charges Bring 10-Year Sentence for Stamets
Aaron Patrick Stamets, a 42-year-old man from Charles Town, West Virginia, has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. This serious charge can lead to up to 10 years of incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000.
According to Acting United States Attorney Randolph J. Bernard, Stamets was indicted on two counts of ‘Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.’ The alleged crimes took place in June and August 2020 in Jefferson County, where Stamets, a person prohibited from having a firearm, is accused of having two firearms.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy D. Helman is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government, which was investigated by the Charles Town Police Department. The Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) supported the investigation under the Attorney General-led Synthetic Opioid Surge (SOS)/Special Operations Division (SOD) Project Clean Sweep.
Project Clean Sweep aims to reduce the supply of synthetic opioids in ‘hot spot’ areas previously identified by the Attorney General of the United States. This initiative seeks to lower the number of drug overdoses and deaths, as well as identify wholesale distribution networks and sources of supply operating nationally and internationally.
OCDETF identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level drug traffickers, money launderers, gangs, and transnational criminal organizations that threaten the United States. This is done through a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach that leverages the strengths of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies against criminal networks.
It’s essential to note that an indictment is merely an accusation. Aaron Stamets is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. The court will determine the outcome of this case, and the actual sentence imposed will be based on the seriousness of the offenses and Stamets’ prior criminal history, if any.
