SALT LAKE CITY – The grim tale of Waneka Rosebud Cornpeach, a Ute Fish and Wildlife Officer from Fort Duchesne, Utah, took a darker turn as she pled guilty in federal court for her role in the harrowing shooting on tribal land in Uinta Canyon. The 42-year-old faced felony charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

The plea agreement reveals that Cornpeach, on July 17, 2022, fired her weapon at two separate victims, inflicting serious injuries upon both. The incident, which unfolded within the jurisdiction of Indian Country, has left a lasting scar on the local community.

Cornpeach was immediately remanded following her plea, and now awaits sentencing on November 17, 2025. This chilling event has once again highlighted the dangers that law enforcement officers face, both on and off duty.
