WASHINGTON – The grim narrative of the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol breach took a darker turn as Bryan Roger Bishop, 51, of Marathon, Florida, pleaded guilty to assaulting law enforcement officers amidst the chaos.
Bishop’s crime was not just an act of defiance but a brazen attack on authority during a solemn legislative session. The incident occurred on the West Plaza of the Capitol building, where he spray-painted chemical irritant directly in the faces of Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers, causing immediate distress and disruption.
According to court documents, Bishop’s actions were part of a larger effort by rioters to overpower law enforcement personnel. After breaching barriers, he entered the Capitol building, wandering through its hallowed halls before escaping at 2:56 p.m., 17 minutes after his initial breach.
Bishop was apprehended by the FBI on August 8, 2023, and faces sentencing on Aug. 29, 2024, in the District of Columbia. The case has been prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section.
This incident is one among over 1,385 charges filed since Jan. 6, 2021, related to the Capitol breach. It stands as a stark reminder of the violence that day and the ongoing investigation into those involved.
