Wanted: Justice for Child Exploitation
In a grim reminder of the darkest corners of the internet, Anthony Mangione, a 51-year-old man from Parkland, Florida, has pleaded guilty to one count of transporting child pornography, a heinous crime that threatens the very fabric of our society.
According to court documents, between March 2010 and September 2010, Mangione engaged in a despicable act of transporting visual depictions of minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct. This is a stark reminder of the pervasive nature of child exploitation and the need for vigilance in our communities.
The guilty plea was entered before U.S. Magistrate Judge James M. Hopkins in U.S. District Court in West Palm Beach, Florida. Mangione was taken into custody pending sentencing, a fate that will be determined on October 5, 2012. The mandatory minimum sentence for this crime is a whopping five years in prison, with a maximum sentence of 20 years hanging precariously in the balance.
Mangione’s guilty plea also comes with a host of other consequences, including a term of supervised release of five years to life following his prison sentence, and a requirement to register as a sex offender in any jurisdiction in which he lives, works or attends school. These measures are a necessary step in ensuring that Mangione does not pose a threat to society upon his release.

Gelber and Trial Attorney Michael Grant of the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS).
