A 24-year-old Orange County, California, resident, Tenzin Orgil, has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for running a massive dark web meth and fentanyl operation, as well as manufacturing illicit narcotics in clandestine laboratories.
Orgil pleaded guilty in July 2023 and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Kathleen M. Williams in the Southern District of Florida. The defendant used various dark web vendor monikers, including iEUROPA, iUSA, iAMERICA, UNITEDAIRLINES, and SVR667, to distribute large amounts of narcotics via dark web marketplaces and the peer-to-peer encrypted chat platform, Wickr.
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Drug Threat Assessment, synthetic drugs like fentanyl and methamphetamine have resulted in the deadliest drug crisis the United States has ever faced. Fentanyl alone killed 38,000 Americans in the first six months of 2023, with a single pill capable of causing a fatal overdose.
Between 2020 and 2021, law enforcement officers in South Florida seized 2.54 grams of fentanyl, in the form of counterfeit oxycodone pills, and 4.965 kilograms of methamphetamine, which was 100% pure. Orgil was also a major manufacturer of MDMA and methamphetamine, operating numerous clandestine laboratories in California.
On Dec. 23, 2022, Irvine Police Department officers stopped Orgil while he was driving a vehicle, finding several precursor chemicals, as well as two cellphones containing evidence of his dark web vendor moniker and access to darknet marketplaces. A search of his residence in California revealed a gun, fake identification cards, and a recipe for manufacturing methamphetamine.
The investigation into Orgil’s operation was a joint effort between the DEA, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and local law enforcement agencies. U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida praised the efforts of the investigators, stating that this sentence sends a strong message to those involved in the dark web and illicit narcotics trade.
