Antonio Perez Toledo, Engine Export Scheme, Florida 2019

MIAMI, FL – In a brazen scheme that spanned from 2015 to 2019, two Florida men, Antonio Perez Toledo, 40, of Ft. Myers, and Brian Perez, 43, of Homestead, were sentenced to federal prison for their roles in a transnational conspiracy to export stolen outboard engines to Mexico.

On April 29, the sentencing hearings were held before U.S. District Judge Kathleen M. Williams, where Antonio Perez Toledo was sentenced to 48 months in prison, and Brian Perez was sentenced to 40 months in prison. Judge Williams also ordered the defendants to forfeit the proceeds they each received from the scheme, and to pay restitution to the identifiable victims.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Antonio Perez Toledo and Brian Perez participated in a conspiracy that used two Miami freight forwarding companies to export over 600 stolen engines with a replacement value of more than $12 million dollars. The co-conspirators affixed false serial number stickers on the engines before exporting them. The scheme involved Antonio Perez Toledo and Brian Perez each personally arranging to export approximately $1 million worth of stolen engines.

The investigation into the case was conducted by HSI Miami and CGIS, with assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). Assistant U.S. Attorney Ana Maria Martinez prosecuted the case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Daren Grove handled asset forfeiture.

The sentences imposed on Antonio Perez Toledo and Brian Perez are a result of their roles in the transnational conspiracy. The scheme not only resulted in significant financial losses but also undermined the integrity of the marine industry.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida has made it clear that they will continue to pursue those who engage in such illicit activities. The sentencing of Antonio Perez Toledo and Brian Perez serves as a warning to others who may be involved in similar schemes.
