Floyd Wood, 48, of DeRuyter, New York, has pleaded guilty to attempting to entice a 12-year-old girl into a sexual encounter.
The crime occurred in April 2016, when Wood, through text messaging, arranged to meet with a female acquaintance and her 12-year-old daughter at a Syracuse hotel to engage in a sexual encounter with both the mother and daughter. However, Wood was communicating with law enforcement officers, who were posing as the mother and daughter.
Wood was subsequently arrested at the Syracuse hotel, where he was to meet the child and her mother, after being observed purchasing items at an adult store that he intended to use in the encounter.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI, Syracuse Resident Agency, and the New York State Police. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Lisa Fletcher as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Wood faces a minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison, as well as a fine of up to $250,000 and a term of supervised release of at least 5 years and up to life. He will also be required to register as a sex offender.
Wood is scheduled to be sentenced by United States District Judge David N. Hurd on May 4, 2017. This case highlights the importance of Project Safe Childhood in identifying and prosecuting individuals who exploit children through the internet.
Floyd Wood’s guilty plea serves as a warning to those who would seek to harm children. The DeRuyter man’s actions were thwarted by law enforcement, and he now faces severe consequences for his crimes.
