ST. LOUIS, MO – A Pennsylvania man has been sentenced for his role in a brazen credit card theft ring that targeted unsuspecting movie patrons at the Landmark Plaza Frontenac Cinema. The scheme, which stretched from May 2017 to January 2018, saw Ford and his accomplices swiping financial information and then using it to fund a shopping spree at Walmart stores across the Eastern District of Missouri.
According to court records, Ford, along with co-conspirators, didn’t need to crack vaults or hack databases. Their operation was far simpler: steal credit and debit cards directly from individuals enjoying a night at the movies. Once in possession of the stolen cards, the crew embarked on a series of unauthorized purchases, racking up a total loss of $36,514.57.
The U.S. Secret Service, typically focused on protecting national leaders, took the lead on this case, demonstrating the agency’s broad mandate to investigate financial crimes. Agents meticulously traced the fraudulent transactions back to Ford and his network, eventually unraveling the entire operation.
Ford pleaded guilty in January of 2019, accepting responsibility for his part in the conspiracy to commit access device fraud. While Ford’s fate is sealed, the investigation isn’t over. Co-defendant Zakia Johnson remains at large and is currently awaiting trial, suggesting the scope of the operation may be even wider than initially understood.
Assistant United States Attorney Kyle T. Bateman is prosecuting the case, highlighting the federal government’s commitment to combating credit card fraud and holding perpetrators accountable. The Eastern District of Missouri has seen a rise in these types of schemes, and law enforcement is actively working to dismantle these criminal enterprises.
This case serves as a stark reminder to consumers to remain vigilant and monitor their credit card statements for any unauthorized activity. While the Plaza Frontenac Cinema was the target in this instance, similar thefts can occur anywhere, and quick reporting is crucial to minimizing losses and preventing further fraud. The Secret Service continues to investigate related leads.
