Crystal Windham, Hydrocodone Fraud, Florida 2024

A 41-year-old Summerfield woman is set to face the music after attempting to obtain a whopping 21,000 hydrocodone tablets by deceit.

Crystal Windham, a former practice manager for a veterinary clinic in Ocala, Florida, pleaded guilty to an information charging her with attempting to obtain a controlled substance by fraud.

According to court documents, Windham used forged prescriptions from two veterinarians to acquire the illicitly obtained hydrocodone tablets between July 2020 and May 2023.

A close examination of the prescriptions revealed that many of them were for deceased pets or for animals that had never been prescribed hydrocodone by the veterinary practice.

On May 9, 2023, Windham attempted to fill another fraudulent prescription for hydrocodone at a pharmacy in Summerfield, but she was stopped before doing so.

When interviewed by law enforcement, Windham confessed to the scheme and the DEA and Marion County Sheriff’s Office sprang into action to investigate the case.

Assistant United States Attorney Tyrie K. Boyer will be handling the prosecution, and if convicted, Windham faces a maximum penalty of four years in federal prison.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of prescription drug abuse and the lengths some individuals will go to obtain them.

The full extent of the damage caused by Windham’s actions is still being assessed, but one thing is certain – her actions have caused irreparable harm to the community and herself.

The DEA and local law enforcement agencies have pledged to continue their efforts to combat prescription drug abuse and bring those responsible to justice.

The sentencing date for Windham has not yet been set, but it’s clear that she will face the consequences of her actions.
