In a disturbing case of child exploitation, a Fort Thompson man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for the sexual abuse of a minor.
A federal court has handed down the sentence to 23-year-old Jordan Traversie, who pleaded guilty to the crime in January 2014. Traversie, who was 19 at the time of the incident, engaged in a sexual relationship with a minor who was at least 4 years younger than him.
The crime occurred between August 2012 and September 2012. According to court documents, Traversie knowingly had sexual intercourse with the victim, who had not yet turned 16.
U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the sentencing, which was imposed by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on April 9, 2014. In addition to the prison sentence, Traversie was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and serve five years of supervised release.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuting the case. Traversie was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
Traversie’s indictment by a federal grand jury came on November 14, 2013, following a thorough investigation into the allegations. The case highlights the importance of protecting vulnerable members of our society from exploitation and abuse.
As a community, we must remain vigilant in preventing crimes of this nature and supporting victims of sexual abuse. The sentencing of Jordan Traversie serves as a reminder that those who commit such heinous crimes will be held accountable for their actions.
