Sex Abuse of Minor Lands Mission Man in Jail

A 27-year-old Mission, South Dakota, man has been sentenced to 15 years in custody for first-degree burglary and sex abuse of a minor. John Joseph Menard was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on March 11, 2014, following a guilty plea to the charges.

The charges stem from two separate incidents. The first occurred on November 5, 2012, when Menard entered a residence in the early morning hours without permission. He made his way to the bedroom where a 7-year-old child was sleeping and attempted to engage in a sexual act with the child.

Menard was also accused of having sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old minor while the minor was staying at his home between February 12, 2009, and February 18, 2009. This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher prosecuted the case, which resulted in Menard’s guilty plea on December 18, 2013. As a result of the plea, Menard was sentenced to 15 years in custody, 10 years supervised release, and a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Menard was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after the sentencing. This case serves as a stark reminder of the severity of sex crimes against minors and the need for strict punishments to protect society.
