Fort Thompson Man Pleads Guilty to Assault
Fort Thompson, SD – In a disturbing case of domestic violence, Michael James Farmer, 26, of Fort Thompson, South Dakota, has pleaded guilty to simple assault and assault by striking, beating, and wounding.
According to court records, Farmer appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on September 23, 2013, and entered a guilty plea to the charges, which stem from incidents on January 19, 2013, and January 21, 2013.
During these incidents, Farmer allegedly assaulted the mother of his children by biting her on the arm and back and hitting her with a broom handle.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is 6 months of imprisonment and/or a $5,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and a $10 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund on each count.
Restitution may also be ordered as part of Farmer’s sentencing, which has been set for November 20, 2013.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges handling the prosecution.
Farmer was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending sentencing.
