Fort Wayne Woman Sentenced for Theft of Mail, ID Theft

A Fort Wayne woman has been sentenced to prison for stealing mail and using someone else’s identity to make purchases and withdraw cash.

Erin Clowser, 35, was sentenced to 51 months in prison, followed by one year of supervised release, after pleading guilty to Theft of Mail, Access Device Fraud and Aggravated Identity Theft, announced U.S. Attorney Kirsch.

Clowser stole mail from various residential mailboxes in the Fort Wayne area between November 2016 and June 2017, and used the personal information of an individual to obtain a debit card, which she then used to make purchases and withdraw cash from ATMs.

As part of her sentence, Clowser was ordered to pay restitution to the victims of her crime in the total amount of $53,005.82. She also agreed to forfeit to the United States items obtained from her illegal conduct, including a 2002 Mercedes Benz S500, assorted electronic and computer equipment, and purses.

The case was a joint investigation by the United States Postal Inspection Services and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with the assistance of the Allen County Police Department, and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Stacey R. Speith.

Clowser’s crimes had a significant impact on the victims, who had their personal information and financial security compromised as a result of her actions.

The sentencing of Clowser serves as a reminder of the consequences of committing crimes such as Theft of Mail and ID Theft, and the importance of taking steps to protect oneself from these types of crimes.
