FORT WAYNE – In a dramatic turn of events, Detric L. Cummings, 43 years old, from Fort Wayne, Indiana, has been sentenced to 420 months in prison by United States District Court Chief Judge Holly A. Brady.
Acting United States Attorney M. Scott Proctor revealed that Cummings pleaded guilty to distributing methamphetamine and fentanyl before facing trial. The jury ultimately convicted him of armed drug trafficking, firearms possession, and maintaining drug-involved premises following a four-day trial.
Cummings’ criminal activities involved selling large quantities of drugs to an undercover officer with the Fort Wayne Police Department between July and August 2022. He was caught with at least one firearm during a drug transaction and later sold a revolver to the same undercover officer in another deal. A subsequent search at one of his drug houses yielded six firearms, ammunition, two digital scales, and additional quantities of fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine.
Despite several prison terms over a violent criminal history that includes attempted robbery as a juvenile, shooting a man, battery convictions, spitting on correctional officers, and nearly killing a woman while trying to collect a drug debt, Cummings continued his reign of terror. He was also sentenced for possessing a dangerous weapon while in prison.
The investigation into this case was spearheaded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, with support from the Fort Wayne Police Department, Drug Enforcement Administration, and Indiana State Police. Assistant United States Attorneys Lesley J. Miller Lowery and Justin C. Sheridan prosecuted the case, which is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer.
The PSN strategy focuses on fostering community trust, supporting prevention efforts, setting enforcement priorities, and measuring results to strengthen public safety.
