Defendant Falsely Represents Social Security Number to Obtain Driver’s License

Boston – In a shocking case of identity theft, a Dominican national has been sentenced for falsely representing a Social Security number as his own.

Francisco Antonio Sanchez Bernabe, 50, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin to time served (approximately one year), one year of supervised release and ordered removed to the Dominican Republic.

Sanchez Bernabe pleaded guilty to false representation of a Social Security number in December 2019. He has been in federal custody since his arrest on the charges on April 18, 2019.

According to court records, on Oct. 25, 2018, Sanchez Bernabe falsely represented that a Social Security number was his in an application for a driver’s license at the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.

In connection with the application, Sanchez Bernabe provided various documents, including a birth certificate and Social Security card, in order to obtain the license.

The investigation was led by the United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling; Jason Molina, Acting Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Boston; and Scott Antolik, Special Agent in Charge of the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General, Office of Investigations, Boston Field Division.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sandra S. Bower of Lelling’s Major Crimes Unit prosecuted the case.
