In a shocking case of elder abuse, Iftekhar Latif Nieon, a 24-year-old Bangladeshi man, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in Western New York. The scheme, which unfolded in 2025, targeted three victims, including a 68-year-old woman and a 73-year-old man, and involved fake tech support and credit card scams.
Nieon and his co-conspirators used fake companies and identities to trick their victims into handing over sensitive financial information. In one instance, they obtained a woman’s credit card information and charged her for virus protection software. When she called to dispute the charge, they convinced her to give them remote access to her computer, allowing them to transfer $20,000 from her savings account to her checking account.
The scammers then told the woman she had to return $19,500, instructing her to withdraw the funds in cash and meet Nieon at a specific location. In another case, a 73-year-old man received an email claiming to be from Geek Squad, warning him that his subscription was about to be renewed and that he would be charged $329.99 unless he called a certain number.
When the man called the number, he was contacted by a co-conspirator who falsely identified himself as a Geek Squad representative. The outcome of the case is a guilty plea from Nieon, who now faces up to 20 years in prison for his role in the conspiracy.
