Tampa, Florida – In a shocking turn of events, a Sarasota real estate professional has been sentenced to prison for mortgage fraud. Freddy Orjuela, Sr. (49, Sarasota) was handed a two-year sentence by U.S. District Judge James D. Whittemore, along with a hefty restitution of $960,020. The court also entered a money judgment in the amount of $1,475,950, which is the proceeds of the fraud.
The guilty verdict was handed down yesterday, after a three-day trial in December 2016. Orjuela was found guilty of making false statements in a mortgage loan application to a federally insured financial institution. This led to a massive financial loss for the institution, which has now been compensated by the court.
According to court documents, Orjuela submitted a mortgage loan application to Century Bank on which he knowingly and willfully overstated his income, understated his liabilities, and falsely denied he had declared bankruptcy within the past seven years. This brazen move was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, who worked tirelessly to uncover the truth.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Callan Albritton and Bob Mosakowski, who worked diligently to bring Orjuela to justice. Their efforts have now paid off, with Orjuela facing the consequences of his actions.
Orjuela’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences of mortgage fraud. This crime not only affects the individual involved but also has far-reaching implications for the financial institution and the community as a whole.
As the investigation continues, it is clear that Orjuela’s actions were driven by a desire for financial gain. His sentence is a testament to the FBI’s commitment to protecting the financial system and bringing those who commit mortgage fraud to justice.
The people of Sarasota can rest easy knowing that justice has been served. The sentence handed down to Orjuela is a warning to anyone who would consider committing similar crimes. Mortgage fraud will not be tolerated, and those who engage in it will face the full force of the law.
