A Sioux City man has been sentenced to over 13 years in federal prison for possessing a firearm in furtherance of distributing marijuana, according to a recent court ruling.
Fredrick Perkins, 32, of Sioux City, Iowa, was sentenced to 165 months in federal prison, following a guilty plea on May 20, 2019, to one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
Perkins' lengthy criminal history includes convictions for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, receive/possess/sell a stolen vehicle, aggravated battery on a government official, and delivery of cannabis.
According to evidence presented during his detention, plea, and sentencing hearings, law enforcement officers searched Perkins' home on the basis of suspected drug-related activity. During the search, a handgun was found on a shelf in the master bedroom, along with a loaded magazine containing 17 rounds of 9mm ammunition. The firearm was previously stolen from another address in Sioux City.
Perkins was also found to have large quantities of marijuana and $2,114 in U.S. currency in his bedroom, closet, and living room.
Perkins was sentenced by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City, Iowa, and will serve a five-year term of supervised release after his prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
Perkins is currently being held in the United States Marshal's custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was investigated by the Sioux City Police Department and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime in communities.
Project Safe Neighborhoods is an evidence-based program that has proven to be effective in reducing violent crime, and focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
