Justin Ernest Breitwieser, Gun Store Burglaries, California 2024

FRESNO, Calif. – Justin Ernest Breitwieser, 56, of Fresno, is heading to federal prison after being sentenced yesterday to 56 months for a brazen pair of burglaries targeting local firearms dealers. U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced the sentence, along with an order for Breitwieser to pay over $2,700 in restitution to the victimized businesses.

The first break-in occurred on September 3, 2022, at a yet-unnamed firearms dealer. Breitwieser didn’t mess around, making off with six firearms, a hefty stash of ammunition, and other valuable items. Less than two months later, on October 29, 2022, Breitwieser struck again, this time targeting a second firearms dealer. This time, the haul included an AR-15 upper assembly, a Glock conversion kit, and a tactical bulletproof vest – clearly indicating intent beyond simple theft.

Federal agents weren’t left in the dark for long. A subsequent search of Breitwieser’s Fresno residence turned up damning evidence linking him to both burglaries. But the search didn’t stop there. Agents also recovered two additional firearms and a staggering 900 rounds of ammunition, raising questions about Breitwieser’s ultimate plans. Was he stockpiling for something bigger? Authorities aren’t saying.

The case was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Fresno Police Department, demonstrating a coordinated push to crack down on gun-related crime in the Central Valley. Assistant United States Attorney Antonio J. Pataca skillfully prosecuted the case, securing the conviction and lengthy sentence. Sources inside the courtroom say Breitwieser offered little resistance during sentencing.

This prosecution falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a broad-based initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and the communities they serve. The Department of Justice recently reinforced PSN with a renewed focus on trust-building, community support, strategic enforcement, and measurable results. You can find more information about PSN at Justice.gov/PSN.

While 56 months is a significant sentence, it remains to be seen if it will be enough to deter others from targeting firearms dealers in the Fresno area. The Grimy Times will continue to monitor this case and report on any further developments. The proliferation of illegal firearms remains a major concern, and authorities are under increasing pressure to stem the flow of weapons onto the streets.
