Fresno Perez, Fentanyl Trafficking, California 2023

Fresno, Calif. — In a blow to the city’s drug trade, 26-year-old Ady Perez of Fresno has been sentenced to five years in prison for his role in the trafficking of fentanyl. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Thurston following Perez’s conviction on charges of possessing over 40 grams of the deadly substance with intent to distribute.

According to court documents, Perez’s arrest came after a botched attempt to sell 1,500 fentanyl pills. The suspect tried to flee in his vehicle but collided with a police car and was taken into custody. A subsequent search of his apartment yielded two loaded firearms, substantial cash, and additional fentanyl and benzodiazepine pills, all prepared for sale.

The Fresno Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration collaborated on the investigation that led to Perez’s arrest. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Cody S. Chapple and Arin Heinz took the lead in prosecuting the case against him.

“Perez’s actions put countless lives at risk,” said U.S. Attorney Eric Grant. “This sentence sends a clear message that the trafficking of deadly drugs like fentanyl will not be tolerated in our community.”

Perez was also found guilty of possession of firearms during the commission of a drug offense, which carries an additional penalty under federal law.

As the city grapples with the ongoing threat of drug trafficking, this sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who engage in such activities. The community can take some comfort in knowing that justice has been served for those affected by Perez’s criminal endeavors.
