BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A federal judge today sentenced a Fultondale physician to six years in prison for prescribing controlled substances without a legitimate medical purpose and engaging in health care fraud.
PAUL ROBERTS, M.D., 48, of Fultondale, was sentenced after pleading guilty to 16 counts. He is also the former co-owner of Southeast Urgent Care (SEUC). Roberts allowed unqualified staff to prescribe controlled substances using pre-signed prescriptions and exchanged drugs for sexual favors.
In related news, STANLEY REEVES, 62, of Demopolis, a pharmacist and owner of F&F Drugs, was sentenced to 38 months for conspiring to fraudulent bill health insurance companies $10.5 million worth of unnecessary compounded drugs.
U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona emphasized the importance of such cases in protecting communities from criminal conduct that endangers lives and impacts healthcare costs. DEA Assistant Special Agent in Charge Clay Morris highlighted the agency’s commitment to justice for those who engage in illegal drug distribution.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Johnnie Sharp, Jr., noted the message sent to medical professionals that neither their licenses nor white lab coats can shield them from legal consequences.
BRETT TAFT, 46, of Tuscaloosa, is a co-defendant in the compounding drug healthcare fraud case. A trial date has not been set.
