⏱ 2 min read

Roderick Michael Bates, a 55-year-old Georgia man, has pleaded guilty to identity theft and wire fraud for stealing over $65,000 worth of farm machinery and equipment from a local business in Salemburg, North Carolina. Using stolen identities and fake driver’s licenses, Bates secured financing for the high-value items, including a zero-turn mower, golf cart, and dump trailers, and had them shipped to him outside of North Carolina.

The scheme was uncovered by the FBI and the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, who worked together to investigate the case. Bates faces a mandatory minimum of 2 years and a maximum penalty of 42 years in prison when sentenced.

U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle warned that his office will prosecute individuals who commit crimes against the people of Eastern North Carolina, saying ‘Criminals need to think twice before stealing from the good and hardworking people in Eastern NC.’ Sampson County Sheriff Jimmy Thornton also expressed his commitment to protecting the property and livelihoods of every citizen, regardless of distance.

The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew R. Petracca, and a copy of the press release can be found on the U.S. Attorney’s website.
