New Orleans Man Sentenced for Cocaine Conspiracy
Gabriel Carreto-Sanchez, a 41-year-old New Orleans resident, was sentenced on December 19, 2018, after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute one kilogram or more of cocaine and possession with the intent to distribute one kilogram or more of cocaine.
U.S. Attorney Peter G. Strasser announced the sentencing, which took place in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle presided over the sentencing.
Carreto-Sanchez was arrested after being stopped by members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as he was returning to New Orleans from Houston, Texas. The FBI had received a tip that Carreto-Sanchez was carrying a large quantity of cocaine.
During the stop, the FBI seized approximately one kilogram of cocaine hydrochloride hidden inside Carreto-Sanchez’s vehicle. The cocaine had been supplied to Carreto-Sanchez by a supplier in Houston.
Carreto-Sanchez was sentenced to 50 months of imprisonment, followed by 4 years of supervised release and a $200 special assessment fee. The prosecution of this case was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan L. Shih.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office praised the work of the FBI in investigating this matter. The case highlights the ongoing efforts to combat cocaine trafficking in the state of Louisiana.
