Former postal worker Vincent Anthony Gailliard Jr., 41, of Sumter, SC, has been sentenced to a harsh 30-month federal prison term for his cunning scheme to steal and sell bank checks through online channels.
Intriguingly, the heist was carried out while Gailliard held a position as a mail handler at the USPS Processing and Distribution Center in Columbia. His modus operandi was simple yet effective: steal mail containing personal bank checks, snap photos with his cell phone, and sell the digital images online, complete with vital account information.
Between April 2022 and May 2023, Gailliard’s exploitation of the nation’s postal system reached its peak. The thief’s sinister plan allowed potential buyers to craft fraudulent checks using the stolen data, which could lead to financial loss for unsuspecting consumers and businesses alike.
“Consumers must be able to trust those who process and deliver our mail,” declared U.S. Attorney Bryan Stirling for the District of South Carolina. “We’ll continue to prosecute those who abuse their positions of trust to defraud members of our community.”
Rodney M. Hopkins, Inspector in Charge of the Atlanta Division, echoed this sentiment: “The sentence handed down in this case will send a clear message to mail thieves that you will be vigorously pursued and brought to justice.”
Judge Joseph F. Anderson, Jr., was firm in his decision, sentencing Gailliard to 30 months’ imprisonment followed by a five-year term of court-ordered supervision. The defendant was also ordered to pay $149,692.14 in restitution.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General, Mid-Atlantic Area Field Office, successfully investigated this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney John Potterfield handled the prosecution.
