CHARLESTON, S.C. – James Benjamin Gosnell, Jr., 68, a sitting Charleston County Magistrate, was taken into federal custody today, accused of possessing sickening child sexual abuse material. The arrest rips away the veneer of respectability from a local official and exposes a dark underbelly of exploitation.
Federal agents with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) initiated the investigation after receiving a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The tip centered on a series of financial transactions – payments funneled to a known distributor of CSAM based in the United Kingdom. These payments, occurring in November 2024, were traced back to a peer-to-peer online money transfer account demonstrably linked to Gosnell’s phone number, address, and email.
A search warrant executed at Gosnell’s Charleston home yielded a chilling discovery: a flash drive packed with numerous videos and images depicting the sexual abuse of children. The material wasn’t limited to older minors; it included depictions of prepubescent children, infants, and toddlers engaged in sexually explicit acts. The sheer volume of abuse documented on that drive paints a disturbing picture of a depraved obsession.
Gosnell appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Molly Cherry this morning and is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday morning. He faces federal charges related to the possession of CSAM, crimes carrying potentially decades in prison. The Department of Justice is framing this case as part of “Project Safe Childhood,” a nationwide initiative dedicated to combating child sexual exploitation. But initiatives are just words; it’s the arrests, the convictions, and the dismantling of this vile industry that truly matter.
This case highlights the disturbing reality that predators can hide in plain sight, even within positions of authority.
