CHARLESTON, S.C. — Rose Emily Lorenzo, the alleged conspirator in the North Charleston public corruption scheme, now faces additional charges after a federal grand jury returned a 12-count superseding indictment against her.
The indictment includes one count of making a false statement to the FBI and two counts of falsification of records in a federal investigation. The allegations claim Lorenzo intentionally misled the FBI about funds being transferred from two non-profits to a member of the North Charleston City Council, and also falsified documents to impede the ongoing investigations.
Lorenzo, 64, had been charged previously with conspiracy to commit bribery, honest services wire fraud, theft, money laundering, and other related offenses. The new charges bring her potential federal prison time up to 20 years.
Scheduled for arraignment on September 25 before U.S. Magistrate Judge Molly H. Cherry, Lorenzo is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
The investigation into the corruption scandal was led by the FBI Columbia Field Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Whit Sowards and Emily Limehouse are handling the prosecution of the case.
This development adds yet another chapter to the grim saga of North Charleston’s public corruption, as authorities continue their pursuit of justice for the citizens affected by this scandal.
