Khalil Keari Barnett, a 30-year-old Gainesville resident, was sentenced to 7 years in prison for his role in a marijuana distribution operation and illegal weapons charges. The crime unfolded when Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a domestic violence call, prompting Barnett to flee the scene. As he attempted to escape, he discarded a bag containing 600 grams of marijuana and a black mask. A firearm and ammunition were also recovered nearby.
Barnett’s troubles began when he tried to enter a rideshare vehicle, but ultimately fled on foot. His prior conviction for possession of a weapon by a delinquent made him ineligible to possess a firearm or ammunition. The sentence was handed down after Barnett pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of a firearm in connection with drug trafficking, and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and federal law enforcement partners. U.S. Attorney John P. Heekin praised the work of the agencies involved, stating that the sentence marked the removal of another violent, drug-peddling criminal from the streets.
Alachua County Sheriff Scott also weighed in on the case, emphasizing the commitment to keeping the community safe from violent criminals who traffic narcotics and possess illegal weapons. The sentence serves as a testament to the efforts of law enforcement to crack down on these types of crimes in Gainesville.
