Gainesville Woman Sentenced to Federal Prison for ID Theft and Fraud

Gainesville, FL – Regina Ward, a 31-year-old resident of Gainesville, was sentenced to 13 months in federal prison and a 3-year term of supervised release for her role in a complex identity theft and fraud scheme.

According to court documents, Ward was involved in a series of meetings with an undercover agent in February 2012. During these meetings, Ward sold a stolen Treasury check for $6,500, as well as ten stolen identities for the purpose of filing fraudulent federal income tax returns.

The stolen identities included names, social security numbers, dates of birth, drivers’ license numbers, and Turbo Tax pin numbers. Ward was paid $850 per identity, bringing the total amount to $8,500.

The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kelly S. Karase.

Ward was also ordered to pay restitution to the Internal Revenue Service in the amount of $6,500. Her sentence serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of engaging in identity theft and fraud.

The incident highlights the need for individuals to be cautious when sharing personal information and to be aware of the risks associated with identity theft.
