Jonathan Kyle Lanier, Carjacking, Florida 2023

OCALA, FL – Senior U.S. District Judge James D. Whittemore handed down a 13-year and 5-month federal prison sentence to Jonathan Kyle Lanier, 24, from Leesburg, for carjacking, conspiracy to commit carjacking, brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime, and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Lanier was found guilty by a federal jury on November 15, 2017.

According to court documents, Lanier, along with Avery Tumer, Timotheus Reed, and Amy Scott, conspired to rob an individual of cash, personal items, and his vehicle. The four met the victim at a Leesburg gas station under false pretenses, where Lanier, Tumer, and Reed attacked the victim, stole his belongings, and took off with his car. All four suspects were apprehended by Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Leesburg Police officers shortly after.

Tumer and Reed have been found guilty on related charges and await sentencing, while Scott pleaded guilty earlier and was sentenced to 46 months in prison.

The FBI’s Daytona Resident Agency, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and the Leesburg Police Department conducted the investigation, which Assistant U.S. Attorney Dale Campion prosecuted.

“This sentence sends a clear message that violent crime and firearms offenses will be met with severe penalties,” stated Whittemore in court.
