Three Orange County gang members, Mike Escobar, James Mendez, and Kevin Trejo, were sentenced to life in federal prison for the 2017 murder of a fellow gangster in Anaheim, California. The victim, a member of a Costa Mesa street gang, had fallen out with a member of the Mexican Mafia prison gang. The murder was carried out on August 21, 2017, as part of a racketeering scheme.
The defendants, all members of different Orange County street gangs, were found guilty of one count of murder in aid of racketeering after an eight-day trial in October 2023. The case was prosecuted by the US Attorney’s Office, with assistance from the FBI and the Orange County Violent Gang Task Force.
The sentences were handed down by United States District Judge Fred W. Slaughter, who heard testimony from prosecutors that the murder was ordered by a member of the Mexican Mafia from behind bars. Law enforcement officials hailed the sentences as a major blow to gang violence in the region.
The case highlights the ongoing struggle to combat gang violence in Southern California, where rival gangs and prison gangs like the Mexican Mafia exert significant influence. The sentences demonstrate the commitment of federal and local law enforcement to holding gang members accountable for violent crimes.
