A graduate student at San Jose State University, Ziheng ‘Tony’ Fang, 30, was arrested for writing hateful and threatening messages in a men’s restroom on campus. The messages, which included bomb threats and swastikas, were discovered on November 5, 2025. Fang, who is pursuing his Master’s Degree in Data Science, allegedly wrote the messages, which also included threats to kill specific ethnic and religious groups.
The messages were part of a series of over 20 instances of hateful and threatening messages found in men’s and gender-neutral restrooms around the SJSU campus since October 2024. Many of these messages included threats specifying a particular date and method of attack. Fang’s fingerprint was found on one of the messages, and surveillance footage showed him entering and exiting the restrooms where some of the messages were written.
Fang accessed buildings where many of the messages were found, according to key card records. He was arrested on July 10, 2026, and made an initial appearance in federal court in San Jose. The arrest is the result of an investigation by the SJSU Police Department and the FBI.
The messages included statements such as ‘!WARNING! MASS BOMB NEXT WEEK’ and ‘Kill all Jews, Muslims, Chinks, and Mexicans.’ The discovery of these messages led to a thorough investigation, which ultimately led to Fang’s arrest. The case highlights the importance of taking hate crimes seriously and the need for swift action to prevent harm to individuals and communities.
