Six Pittsburgh-area men, including Muhammed Koc, Omar Alshmari, Abraham Choudhry, Emirhan Arslan, Ali Alkhaleel, and Adeel Piracha, were charged with hate crime and obstruction of justice for a late-night attack on a Jewish male in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh on September 27, 2024. The incident began with the group making virulent antisemitic statements to the victim, who was wearing a Star of David pendant, and escalated into a physical assault by Koc and Alshmari. The attack was allegedly motivated by the victim’s Jewish identity.
The defendants are accused of conspiring to obstruct justice by providing false and misleading testimony before a federal grand jury investigating the assault. This obstruction is considered a serious offense, as it undermines the pursuit of justice and will not be tolerated, particularly when defendants testify falsely to protect individuals who commit hate crimes.
The charges were announced by United States Attorney Troy Rivetti, who stated that the Department of Justice will prosecute this alleged act of violent antisemitism to the fullest extent of the law. Attorney General Pamela Bondi also emphasized the importance of protecting the First Amendment right to worship freely and without fear for Jewish Americans and all Americans of faith.
The indictment includes seven counts, charging the defendants with violating the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, obstructing justice, and conspiring to obstruct justice. The case is a significant example of the Department of Justice’s commitment to combating hate crimes and protecting the rights of all individuals, regardless of their faith or identity.
